    Cycle from East to West

Nowhere can you experience the water and the floodplains from as close as in Rivierenland and De Bommelerwaard. Follow the route from East to West along De Waal, pass through Munnikenland, Slot Loevestein, the Gamerensche and De Brakelse Benedenwaarden. A route that is characterized by dikes, quays, ewe forests and lakes. You pass grassland where Konik horses and Red Geus cattle graze and where you sniff the most delicious scents along the summer quays in the summer months. Field sage and Wild Marjoram, also known as oregano, are then in full bloom. Enjoy a sporty, beautiful and educational trip in peace!

    Hanseatic city of Nijmegen

The history of the oldest city in the Netherlands goes back more than 2000 years. Wisdom comes with the years they know in Nijmegen, because you experience the history vividly. Follow the Romans in Nijmegen, then stroll along the trendy boutiques in the shopping streets and plop down on one of the terraces for a snack and a drink. The city is surrounded by a green rolling landscape. From the Waalkade you can walk straight into nature and beaches, cross over De Waal to the impressive Rivierpark, or take a walk along the vineyards and hills at Groesbeek. Towards the west you can taste how fertile the Betuwe and De Bommelerwaard are, the continuation of your trip to Zaltbommel. Dream away in the romantic Land van Maas and Waal!

    Zaltbommel is buzzing!

Who does not know its silhouette from the Waal bridge and the A2? Visit Zaltbommel, because the city and De Bommelerwaard have everything to offer you! The fortified town of Zaltbommel has retained its small-scale and historic character and is rich in nice shops and restaurants. Sights are plentiful, such as Stadskasteel Zaltbommel, Slot Loevestein, Kasteel Ammersoyen and the southwestern Dutch Waterline, recently nominated as a UNESCO heritage. Bordering on De Waal and De Maas, De Bommelerwaard has been known as boat owners for some time. But with its vast floodplains and attractive cycling and walking routes, it is also discovered by walkers and cyclists. Enjoy the peace and the greenery. Do you want to get into the big cities from De Bommelerwaard? That is possible, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Den Bosch, Breda, Gorinchem and Nijmegen are less than an hour away.

    Search for the adventure

Loevestein Castle, the most famous castle in the Netherlands, because who doesn’t know the story of Hugo de Groot who escaped in a book chest? In the original Dutch river landscape, where Maas and Waal meet, knight Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built in 1361. At the time ideal for levying tolls, nowadays attractive for a day out. Everyone can experience everything in the castle, the forecourt and the soldiers’ village. In the museum you will learn about Hugo de Groot, the Middle Ages and the Dutch Waterline. With games you learn more about gunpowder and weapons, and in the basement you can feel the experience of high water. Everyone gets a key to discover everything. Experience a great adventure for young and old!

    Gorinchem

Gorinchem is a real fortified city, beautifully situated opposite Woudrichem on the Merwede and the Linge. Around 1600 the medieval city became a “modern” fortress. The Eighty Years’ War was in full swing and the fortress kept the Spaniards at bay. Later in 1672 Gorinchem became an important fortress in the Oude Hollandse Waterlinie, Gorinchem also remained a strategic stronghold in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The original ramparts with bastions are almost completely intact. The footpath over the ramparts runs all the way around and gives beautiful views over the rivers; unique in the Netherlands! Gorinchem is therefore the largest authentic fortress in the Netherlands. Take a look at the fully restored Lingehaven and historic harbor as an extension of this, a nice quiet place on the edge of the pleasant city center.

    Dordrecht

The English newspaper The Times called Dordrecht a ‘hidden gem’ and tipped it as an alternative to city trips to world cities such as Paris and Barcelona. Dordrecht is perhaps indeed one of the Netherlands’ best kept secrets. You will find a city on an island full of culture, bustling festivals, rugged nature and a rich past, witness the thousands of monuments in the historic city center. And certainly in 2020 a visit to Dordrecht is worthwhile. This year it is celebrated that Dordrecht has 800 years of city rights. There are events, special exhibitions and activities throughout the year. Make your visit to Dordrecht complete with a city walk, a boat trip, or a visit to a museum. Dordrecht city on the water …

    Hoek van Holland

Hoek van Holland has many beautiful faces, from the blue water to the yellow dunes and the green forest. The area is known for the beautiful beach, the Noorderpier and the Nieuwe Waterweg with the Maeslantkering. Relaxing or being active on the long and wide sandy beach, or walking through the Hollandse Duinen National Park. But there is much more to see and experience in this bustling resort. Attractive events are organized in the village and on the beach. The museums, art and culture ensure a varied and attractive selection. In addition, there are many beach clubs and catering establishments, creating a pleasant nightlife. Hoek van Holland is the ideal starting point for a day in Rotterdam!
